LETTER : Lunar irony

Sir: At about the time we received pictures of the Moon landings, a story was running about a woman aged over 60 in South Africa who had given birth to a baby.

I was working in a London hospital and on the ward was an older nursing auxiliary, unable to have children, who firmly rejected the former story as a scam "all done with mirrors" and ardently believed in the latter, as it gave her hope. We nurses, who knew better, scoffed.

Ironic, that since then, doubt has been cast on those pictures (letters, 7, 13 March) and a woman in her 60s has had a baby. All these years later, I feel I owe her an apology.
