IF MY book (A Paper House, reviewed 12 July) 'performs a useful service' by 'reminding us' that Croatia's government contributed to causing 'the civil war there', then it is a service I regret. Last year's assault on Croatia by Serbia and the Yugoslav Army, in which a minority of Croatian Serbs served as a fifth column, was not truly a civil war at all.
It is dismal at this late date to have to reiterate these basic facts; but without knowing them, it is impossible to understand Europe's worst war and humanitarian crisis since Nazism.
