Sir: If, as you say is likely, John Major votes for a compromise reduction of the homosexual age of consent to 18 ('Gay vote could be scuppered by despondent MPs', 12 January), he will miss an excellent chance to demonstrate moral leadership and show he is made of something other than waffle and fudge.

Edwina Currie's amendment, calling for a single age of consent, is a beacon of common sense, justice and fairness, shining in the fuzzy wilderness of the Tory 'back to basics' campaign. At least she seems to be have all her eggs in the right basket.

Yours sincerely,

BRIAN SIMPSON
