Sir: An anniversary of an unusual kind occurs today: the 2,000th First of August. The month Sextilis was officially renamed 'Augustus' by a decree of the Roman Senate, probably ratified by a law passed in the Assembly, in 8BC (Cassius Dio, Book 55, Chapter 6, Section 6). This may be counted one of the most successful honorific measures of recorded history.
Yours faithfully,
