Sir: Today's leading article (6 May) suggests that John Major spent "too much time governing and not enough campaigning".
It would be nearer the mark to say that he spent too much time managing and not enough governing. And while this may have produced an economy in reasonable shape it did not produce the sense of purpose and leadership which characterise good democratic government and to which electorates respond. This directly contributed to the scale of the Conservative Party's defeat - a fact which Conservative MPs will doubtless bear in mind when selecting a successor to Mr Major.
