YOUR article 'Abuses of memory' (1 May) did not make clear that memories of childhood sexual abuse are often recovered outside therapy or within mainstream therapies that use neither hypnosis nor regression techniques. Within a safe setting, the memories, once so unendurable, are allowed to emerge gently and be integrated. It is also relevant that the False Memory Syndrome Foundation in the United States was set up by Dr Ralph Underwager, who is on record as saying that having sex with children can be seen as part of God's will.
