Letter: Military manners

Sir: It was inevitable that the Army would soften its treatment of recruits (report, 25 August), but it is sad that we may never hear again an angry sergeant abusing an awkward recruit with "Why did your muvver have you? Was it just to annoy me?"

Mindless abuse to some, no doubt, but others may feel a tinge of sorrow at the passing of a tradition.
