Sir: Alun Michael MP (Letters, 22 June) believes that Labour supporters should refrain from backing the Liberal Democrats in the Christchurch by-election since a good Labour showing 'would send shivers up the spines of ministers'.
On the contrary, Conservatives fear nothing more than a consolidation of the trend evidenced at Newbury and in the shire elections that the opposition parties are effectively mobilising the anti-Tory majority across the country instead of ruinously cancelling each other out.
Yours faithfully,
