Letter: More public officials to lessen our insecurity

Sir: I was so pleased to read the article 'We'd never tangle with the park-keeper' (25 February). I am sure there would be less crime and vandalism, especially by children, if there were more people about - park-keepers, bus conductors, lavatory attendants, station staff, and so on. And it would provide useful and much-needed jobs.

We are told we cannot afford to employ people in jobs of this kind. Bearing in mind the cost of crime and vandalism and the lower quality of life a feeling of insecurity brings, I think we cannot afford not to.

Yours sincerely,

MARION C. FINCH
