VANDA Lucke (4 April) may be relieved to hear that noisy bikes are already outlawed.
All new bikes sold must conform to EC regulations, specifying a noise level of 98 decibels under certain conditions. Bikes are now quieter than some cars, indeed exhausts are silenced to such a degree that tyre and chain noise can be greater than the engine noise.
Modifications to exhausts are also strictly controlled, all after-market parts having to pass noise tests, and be certificated for road use.
Personally, I find booming car music systems offensive, as are many lawnmowers, strimmers, garden shredders and barking dogs. Are these nuisances also to be regulated against?
