Letter: My kind of town

Sir: I am from Chicago. I have lived in London for 14 years. I grew up under Mayor Richard J. Daley (the man who gave John Kennedy the presidency of the United States) and Chicago machine politics.

Chicago ('the city that works') grew, prospered and developed under machine politics, and the likes of Danny Rostenkowski (Profile, 4 June). Your own travel editor, Simon Calder, recently referred to Chicago as the finest city in America. Chicago machine politicians were, and are, far from perfect. But, by God, they get things accomplished.

The more I experience London the more I realise this city could use a few Danny Rostenkowskis]

Sincerely,

VALERIE J. MONKS

London, SW13

4 June
