Sir: I was amazed to read that the University of Central Lancashire has banned the use of the word my in the introduction of a spouse. I am currently reading Wild Swans and had been naively telling myself that we would never tolerate the petty invasion of our freedom in such personal issues as I was finding had happened under Mao's regime. I was wrong.
I find political correctness to be a bizarre new morality; for me the common courtesy is for 'my husband' to acknowledge me as his wife. I certainly have no wish to change that, and neither does he. It is alarming to think that anyone should have the right to take disciplinary action over such a personal matter as this.
Yours sincerely,
SARAH ROGERS
