Letter: Nations of Ireland

Sir: While I join with your correspondents (20 January) who jib at the term "loyalist" used in Northern Ireland, I wonder why they do not go further. "Republican" implies democracy, a constitution, law and order; "nationalists" speak for a united nation. Neither term fits.

Reality will break through only when we talk of "British" and "Irish". At bottom, this is a nationality problem, requiring a Swiss-type solution.
