THE RESIDENTS of Chelsea Harbour ('Eurotrains rumble Chelsea's rich calm', 6 March) would probably be happier if the plans for the increased use of the adjacent rail line included building a local station. Needless to say, this cock-eyed government's idea of transport funding doesn't work like that. Take the Gospel Oak to Barking line in north London, for example. It is clapped-out and neglected, and has the oldest trains on British Rail. Its very future is threatened because there is no money to repair crumbling bridges. The Department of Transport won't pay for those - yet it has paid for a bridge to carry the line over the new M11 link road ( pounds 250m of government money for 3.5 miles).
