Letter: New world order

Sir: Mohammed Al-Fayed, chairman of Harrods, recently and graciously offered to pay for the medical care of the two-year-old British boy in need of bone-marrow treatment. It appears his employees are also capable of panaceas. In my weekly fax to the food department, I concluded my shopping list with a simple, spontaneous request for 'Peace in the world', thinking of the Bosnian situation in particular.

The order arrived today. Stuck between the double cream and the cheeses was the printed invoice, including the typed message: 'Hoping peace will be here soon. Out of stock at the moment.'

Yours sincerely,

JONATHAN SINCLAIR CAREY
