Sir: John Windsor curiously omits to mention one of the most interesting features of the HMV painting: both dog and gramophone are sitting on his master's coffin - a poignant point, for sure.

Sadly, this feature is rarely apparent on the cropped-down versions of the paintings we usually see - as in the one accompanying Mr Windsor's article.
