Sir: I can help B. M. Young (letters, 26 July) to understand why many English males keep to their jackets in tropical temperatures. The reason is that they use the jacket as a shoulder bag (more precisely, a two-shoulder bag).
Where would the contents of their pockets be put without a jacket? The obvious answer is a bag: clutch, hand, shoulder or otherwise. But this would smack too much of decadent Continental practice.
Yours faithfully,
R. A. COOPER
