Sir: Michael S Maxson of Toledo, Ohio, (letter, 15 November) cannot have travelled very much around his own country. Smoking has been banned in restaurants in Los Angeles (and the adjoining cities of Beverly Hills, Glendale and Burbank) for the past five years. There are several other cities in California with the same ruling.

Perhaps Mr Maxson doesn't travel because there is also a smoking ban on all domestic flights within the US.
