Sir: Margaret Maxwell's debunking of the Antarctic expedition of Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Dr Michael Stroud (15 February) made sorry reading.

Not only did she fail to appreciate the extraordinary personal qualities required for such a feat but she gave scant value to the motivation for it, namely to raise money for multiple sclerosis research. This was the 'quintessentially British' element in their achievement, and admiration, not ridicule, is in order.

Yours faithfully,

AMBER WELLESLEY SMITH
