Sir: If people are really serious about trying to make the Royal Opera House the "People's Opera House" it would be a good idea to get some people's democracy into the system. The House already has a very good supporters' club, called the Friends of Covent Garden, which has put thousands of pounds into the ballet and opera over the years. It should be asked to vote three members on to the board.
Another natural constituency is the employees of the ROH. It may be somewhat radical for New Labour to allow the workers to elect three people to the board, but members of the best opera orchestra in the world, singers, dancers, technicians, craftsmen and women, even administrators would know something about how the place works.
