Sir: Lord Taylor is absolutely right (report, 15 June). The appointment of judges should not be interfered with either by politicians or minority pressure group activists. Quality should be the only criteria.
However, the present appointments system does throw up a percentage of notoriously bad judges, yet nothing effective is done about it. The members of this minority damage the standing of the majority, because they make good news with their gaffes and ill judgement. There should be in place a system for their detection and removal.
Yours faithfully,
MICHAEL BECKMAN
