Sir: Austin Pielou (Letters, 5 July) states that "Pope Adrian IV `granted Ireland . . . to the King of England'. " What he neglected to mention was that Pope Adrian IV was an Englishman called Nicolas Breakspear, the only Englishman ever to hold this position. A cynic may wonder whether he was guided by God or nationalism. In those days popes were hardly apolitical.
