Sir: Bryan Appleyard ('Beware a card marked 1984', 29 September) mentions Britain being alone in retaining passports for travelling within a borderless Europe.

Why then was I required to produce my passport at the Dutch, Belgian, Luxembourg and French borders during my recent holiday?
