Sir: While pavement cycling can present hazards to pedestrians, there are no reliable statistics to prove that it is as dangerous as is claimed. The figures cited in your article "pounds 20 fines for `Lycra louts' who pedal on pavement" (14 January) do not indicate where the collisions took place, or which party was at fault.
All the figures can tell us is that bikes pose less of a threat to pedestrians than cars do, as in the same period there were more than 35,000 reported collisions between cars and pedestrians.
