I WAS astounded to read of British Rail's plans to close the branch line between Romford and Upminster in Essex to all but peak-time trains (Notebook, 10 January). The pounds 60,000 a month they say vandalism is costing would pay the full-time wages of at least 60 proles or plebs to staff stations, as well as gaining more revenue from off-peak travellers.
