Sir: I was surprised to read the leading article 'Flush with profit, but no Ladies or Gents' (19 April) in which you take the reader on a journey from the first public lavatory ever built, via the 1992 Tory Party Conference to arrive, outraged, at Marks & Spencer.
It is untrue that Marks& Spencer fails to provide such facilities for their customers. Our policy is that every new store built has toilet facilities provided, and while we cannot claim to be perfect in this aspect across the company, we are taking steps to provide facilities where possible as we upgrade the older stores in the chain.
After all 'spending a penny' was where it all started]
Yours sincerely,
BRIAN HUDSPITH
