Letter: Physical abuse must not be ignored

Sir: When I worked as a house mother in a school for children with special needs, some 10 years ago, I witnessed the headmaster hitting brain-damaged children, saying "It's the only language they understand". I also saw the matron of the school throw a jug of orange juice over a 17-year-old retarded young adult, who then hid under a dining room table. I saw many bruises on young arms and legs, administered by adult staff.

When I complained to the local authority about what I had seen, I was told that I was clearly an "excitable" woman and my resignation would be welcomed. Sexual abuse is not the only kind.
