Sir: Apropos John Lichfield's report "Pavement artists have the drop on the City of Light" (1 March), the slang equivalent of caninette, the term for the machines clearing Parisian pavements of dog faeces. It is chiraclette - a charming paronomasia on Chirac, former mayor of Paris, and chie + raclette: "shit-scraper".
