Sir: 'Forces Sweethearts' (an exhibition at the Imperial War Museum, which includes letters home written by British soldiers) is not missing an apostrophe. The word 'Forces' is being used adjectivally - cf, 'soldier boy'.
If the exhibition had been called 'Army, Navy and Airforce Sweethearts', nobody would have batted an eyelid. The correct use of the apostrophe is more complex than your correspondent Stephen Thomas thinks (letter, 22 April).
