Sir: On 18 June of last year, my four- year-old daughter, Isobel, received a letter from Sir Norman Fowler, asking her to donate to Conservative Party funds. Had he mentioned a knighthood, I'd have pillaged her piggy bank for some pennies. He didn't, so I didn't.
