Letter: Quicker by rail than by road

Sir: Reggie Nadelson's train journey ('Trapped on a train with the Great BR Bore', 15 October) contrasts with my recent experience. This year, only one out of 20 InterCity trains to or from Euston has been late. In neither the first nor the second class have I found 'the coach jammed with sullen travellers'. Was her report written 10 years ago? British Rail is getting there.

This contrasts with the motorways. In the almost predictable delays, I find that I cannot do any work - neither reading nor writing - for the traffic still moves, but very slowly. Instead, I spend my time hunting the airwaves for travel reports, which, when found, seem not to know about the queue I am stuck in.

Yours sincerely,

NEILL S. COOPER
