Sir: Steven Barnett (Letters, 5 April) claims that senseless violence is not explained by video nasties alone. While agreeing with this, it is however possible to draw a different conclusion to his.
If at least some violence is partially encouraged by the videos, as is consistent with Mr Barnett's theories, then there is an argument for tighter controls. Merely because the videos are not a complete explanation is no justification for expressing concern and not acting. In any policy decision, one must weigh benefits against costs and in this case, the cost to society of withdrawing such films would be slight.
