Letter:Return of Ned Kelly

Sir: Robert Milliken (3 August) was only partially correct when he described The Story of the Kelly Gang as "Australia's first feature film". Produced, written and directed by the Tait brothers of Melbourne in 1906 and running for 100 minutes, Kelly Gang was also the first feature to be made anywhere in the world. In 1979 the British Film Institute acknowledged the Taits as makers of the world's first feature in an article on Australian film-making.

For most people alive today the phrases "going to the movies" and "visiting the cinema" (and all their lingual variations) have always implied at least one feature-length film on the programme, billed as "the main attraction". In this sense the current celebrations of the "Century of Cinema" are ten years premature.
