Sir: I was surprised to read in your leading article (21 August) that the concept of the Royal Family was developed during the Second World War and should now, in your view, be abandoned.
I do not know whether this concept is, in fact, as old as Cranmer's Book of Common Prayer, but the 1935 copy of this volume orders prayers for 'our gracious Queen Mary, Edward, Prince of Wales, and all the Royal Family' at both morning and evening daily prayer.
Yours faithfully,
