Sir: Ray Monk's fascinating article 'The last testament of Bertrand Russell' (24 November) brought to mind a sharp recollection of what I think must have been the great man's last radio broadcast.

The interviewer asked him: 'What would be your last word of advice to the human race?'

Russell, after a slight pause, said simply in that beautiful, mellifluous voice: 'Hatred is foolish; love is wise.'
