Letter: Scholars and rowers

Sir: With reference to your article on the replica Greek Trireme ('Oarsmen learn the secrets of ancient Greek war machine', 16 June).

The problem of synchronisation of oarsmen at one deck level can be overcome simply by lashing the inboard end of each oar to the two adjacent oars, then they cannot but move together.

Yours faithfully,

J. D. O'TOOLE
