From Mr A. Chatterjee

Sir: Polly Toynbee has been extremely brave and thoroughly justified in her arguments. As for Mother Teresa, she is living in cloud cuckooland. In 1991, there were, in India, 32.7 million children (under four years of age) living in institutions, whereas Mother Teresa's Shishu Bhavan (children's home) in Calcutta has about 100 places. So, when she says "give me all your unwanted babies", who is she kidding? In Calcutta, of course, there are scores of (licensed) abortion clinics, including one a few hundred yards from Mother Teresa's doorstep.

Yours faithfully,

A. Chatterjee
