Sir: Just what is the Independent thinking of? The final paragraph of today's leading article on the Monklands East by-election makes sorry reading.

You call for the Labour Party to avoid 'giving a Scottish parliament in Edinburgh entrenched powers'. This is an affront to the huge majority of the Scottish people who, in election after election, have voted overwhelmingly for candidates (Labour, Liberal and SNP) who offer just that.

What is it about a Scottish parliament that gets the London establishment in such a lather?

Yours regretfully,

GEORGE ROSIE
