Scott's historic resonances

Sir: By chance I was attending a performance of Blood Libel, Arnold Wesker's new play about the disturbing, yet fascinating, tale of the boy saint William of Norwich in the 12th century. A link with events happening at about the same time in "another place" struck me as I read in the programme notes a quotation from the introduction to Dr Jessop's late Victorian translation of The Life and Miracles of St William of Norwich.

It reads:

A man may start by wishing the truth without going the right way to arrive at it, and may end by embracing falsehood till he cannot bear to part with it.
