Letter: Seasonal sobriety

Sir: Since coping with the effects of alcohol on bus passengers ('The best and worst of Christmas', 21 December), Jonathan Glancey has spent the Christmas holiday in Muslim countries.

If he wishes for oases of sobriety, he need not travel so far. The 'Sally Army bands trumpeting along the route' should have served to remind him that there are home-grown total abstainers in the Christian tradition. Islam does not have a monopoly.

Yours faithfully,

DAVID E. GUY
