JOHN A DAVIS'S letter (10 March) reminded me of an argument I had with an estate agent. Apropos advertising budgets and advance fees, he said "All I want is my downside covered . . ."
In the real world of trade and commerce, to which he was obviously a complete stranger, no one has their "downside covered". In the hotel business, for instance, we have to maintain a building with comfortable beds in it and food ready to feed guests. We have to advertise our services in order to obtain those guests. Can you imagine what the estate agent's reaction would have been had I included on his bill an extra fiver "for advertising"?
