Sir: Vernon Bogdanor's logic is faulty. He writes ('I'm sorry minister, but that's a swindle', 20 December): 'we shall only secure civil servants of guts and courage if we give them . . . constitutional protection'. But if they have protection, they don't need courage, and - perhaps more importantly - vice versa.
