Sir: Many people must have been as moved as I was by the documentary Heart of the Matter, shown on BBC 1 on 26 July, about refugees, especially in relation to the Balkan crisis. I was struck by the comment of Philip Rudge that compassion fatigue is a more deadly epidemic than Aids - and I agree.
Towards the end of the 20th century I would hope that we humans inhabiting the same planet can regard others undergoing enormous suffering as members of the same human family.
The UK government should show the concern of its people by allowing many more refugees into this country, in spite of its acknowledged economic and other difficulties, which I believe pale into insignificance when compared with those of the homeless, hopeless and bereaved of the former Yugoslavia.
Yours sincerely,
