Sir: I was saddened and disappointed to learn that Claire Rayner's advertisement for sanitary towels has been banned ('Legal, decent, honest and banned from TV', 11 January).

Menstruation is as much a part of a woman's life as shaving is a man's - so why the shame and

secretiveness?

The problem lies with the conditioning of a society in which girls and women are made to feel ashamed of their menstrual blood or that it is dirty. It is not.
