Sir: I was born and raised in America, and I have never seen this "American- style" smoking ban in any of our bars (letter, 14 November). I do know that a ban was tried in Toronto in restaurants and was a complete flop. Most of our restaurants have no-smoking areas, but I have never seen a restaurant that you could not smoke in.
