Sir: Leo Chapman writes (Letters, 10 May) that the English alphabet has only one consonant ("v") that has one sound, cannot be produced by other combinations of letters and is never silent. Even the letter "v" fails this test: the combination "ph" in "Stephen" is pronounced "v".
