Sir: The damage to St Ethelburga-the-Virgin is a tragedy. It was one of the few medieval churches left in the City, and a wonderful antidote to the bland 19th- and 20th-century buildings around it. If, as it seems, it cannot be rebuilt, it would be reckless of the Church and the City to indulge in the 19th-century practice of flogging off church land for offices. Surely, the garden behind the church could be expanded on to the site of the ruin, providing a much-needed oasis for the City.
