Sir: As a registered nurse who trained about 30 years ago, I feel that a decline in nursing ('A whiff of NHS decay', 28 December) began long before NHS trusts were thought of. It is therefore unfair to blame government policy for the decline. The blame lies with the professional regulatory bodies which wanted nursing to develop into an academic discipline and which have, in consequence, abandoned the caring principles that are the basis of 'real nursing'.
Yours faithfully,
JANET JOHNSON
