Sir: John Watson (letter, 4 July) misses the point about carbon dioxide emissions from cyclists. The 'greenhouse' threat is from the rapid release from fossil fuels of carbon accumulated by vegetation over many centuries.
A cyclist (unless he had coal for breakfast) is emitting atmospheric carbon only recently absorbed by plants, and which can be re-absorbed by other plants in a balanced natural cycle.
