Christopher Huhne implies that the land-value tax is politically unacceptable (Letters, 23 June). Yet our present tax system is nothing more than fines and penalties for engaging in legal economic activity.

The Land Value Taxation Campaign proposes a universal property tax based on site values. This would make it uneconomic to allow land to stand vacant and permit the reduction of other taxes.
